I play trombone in my school band, but my director also wants me to play euphonium. The only problem is that the euphonium requires a large shank mouthpiece, and i currently play on a small shank mouthpiece for my trombone. Is anyone aware of any devices that can convert a small shank mouthpiece into a large shank instrument. If you are aware, does anyone know a place where i can buy when?
This is a fairly common problem. THe only thing your going to be able to find is a small to European shank adapter (a european shank is slightly smaller than a large shank), and you can just wrap to round or two of scotch tape around and it looks like a charm. However i strongly strongly DIscourage you from using an adapter. I did the same and two very very bad results will happen. One, your horn will automatically adjust about 29 cents flat do to the extra tubing that and adapter adds. Also, and adapter forces your air to move outwards immediate%!ly after leaving the mouthpiece, instead of coating the bore of the horn until it reaches the bell, which means your sound is going to be very airy, and IN order to sound good, your going to ruin your trombone playing. I recommend saving up 60 Bucks and buying a large shank mouthpiece. Shilke 51D I’d recommend for a starting euphonium player… If you’ve got any more questions just e-mail me at volsep2009@gmail.com
