What trumpet should I get?
I am looking at buying a new trumpet. I need a professional trumpet that will last me a lifetime. Under $2500 preferably. I have played the regular $37 Bach Strads before and I wasn’t too impressed, they felt a little to constricted and didn’t get the deep tone I am looking for.

So which is better? Is there another you would recommend?
It is important to be concerned about how you will blend with other players in the trumpet section within groups that you may choose to play with.
In my opinion, I think that it’s best to choose a trumpet with that has what I like to call the “American Sound Model”. It is based upon the sound quality of a Bach trumpet. The reason for this is the bell design of the Bach Stradivarius model. For years, the top professional trumpets were Bach, Benge, and Schilke. With regard to Benge trumpets, this is pre-UMI/Conn-Selmer. They were more popular on the West Coast, as Bach and Schilke was more prevalent on the East Coast. While Schilke trumpets are excellent instruments, they didn’t blend well within trumpet sections. Schilke added the “S Series”, made specifically to blend more with Bach trumpets.
Enter… Yamaha, along with a host of other manufucturers which manufacture trumpets that some refer to as “boutique trumpets”. As for the Xeno models, I have always found them to be a little bright. There are a lot of classical players who choose to use the YTR-8310Z Bobby Shew model for a Bb trumpet. The lacquered model has a nicer sound than the silverplated model, in my opinion.
While the popular choice might be a Bach trumpet, the quality control is not what it should be with Bach trumpets. In my lifetime, I have only played 2 which I would consider owning. They did not play like a Bach trumpet. They did not feel constricted, as you have pointed out with the Bach trumpets which you have tried. Players who are able to find a “good one” often have to choose it from a selection (15 or more) of Bach’s. Few music stores can afford to carry that kind of an inventory, and few trumpet players have the patience to take that much time play-testing that many horns.
Some companies, such as Kanstul for example, happen to make great bells, and some make great valves (like Getzen). The smaller, indepent companies who strive to make a high quality professional trumpet use the best parts available from different manufacturers, in order to make a better trumpet. The difficult part for the smaller companies is to remain at a price-point that is somewhat competitive with the larger manufacturers.
A very good friend of mine bought a Teatro trumpet. He told me that it has Getzen valves, and he said that it’s the best horn that he’s ever played. He said that he played Bach trumpets before he found this one. I don’t remember where he said he bought it, but I’m sure that you could find out by doing a Google search.
