Do I need to switch mouthpiece for trumpet?
I’ve been playing trumpet for a year and a half and my problem is my tone sounds horrible. Also i can’t play high notes that well and it’s probably cause of my thick lips. My band teacher suggests me playing the tuba. I think my mouthpiece is too small and I use bach 7c. Do I need a bigger mouthpiece?
sorry you’re struggling with the instrument. please know that there are wonderful trumpet players with thick lips, thin lips, and everything in between. anyone can become a masterful trumpet player if s/he works smart and hard. 95% of trumpet playing is learning to use your air correctly – it isn’t fussing with your mouthpiece, equipment, or even worrying about your lips.
so anyhow, a bigger mouthpiece like a bach 3c or 1 1/2 c might help, but it isn’t going to make a huge difference. instead of messing with your mouthpiece, decide if you really want to play the trumpet, and if you do, start practicing in a disciplined and systematic manner. you’ll need good method books and good instruction if you want to go far.
